You’ll identify the strengths and challenges of a business idea. And cultivate the knowledge and skills to develop your concept into a business.
Overview
Master Class-at-a-Glance
In the Master Class Series, you’ll go through the four levels of the Business Model Canvas (BMC) as well as take part in other relevant workshops. You’ll need to complete the Master Class Series to move to the Academy level.
What is BMC?
BMC is tool to help you visualise all the building blocks required to start a business. It also helps existing businesses to change and improve business models. A business model describes how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value.
BMC (levels I to IV)
- Idea validation, value proposition and customer definition
- Key activities, partners and resources
- Customer relationships and channels
- Revenue model, cost structure and budget
Digital Skills
You’ll gain the ability to access the technology you need to run a business including Microsoft Office, Google Docs/Sheets/Slides, PowerPoint, social media, database management and various e-commerce platforms. As part of creating your business’ multi-phase technology and adoption plan, you’ll build out a phase one implementation plan that incorporates a database and business-appropriate social media accounts
Legal Basics
Introduces you to the regulations and laws you need to understand and follow as a business owner. This includes taxation and business registration/incorporation.
Self-Care
Examine the impact of trauma and mental health challenges on success. By focusing on supports you may need as a Black entrepreneur, you’ll receive information and resources to create a comprehensive self-care plan.

The Trailblazer Program sets Black identifying entrepreneurs from 18 to 39 up for business growth. This eight-week program covers topics such as:

- Sales
- Digitizing your business
- And much more!
The sisters Abygail, Alexandria and Ashleigh Montague established BLK Owned Hamont to create an open resource for themselves and their community to find/support Black-owned businesses in the Greater Hamilton Ontario Area (GHA).
The dSWL Program targets Western Canada Black women entrepreneurs who have started and registered their business within the last 5 years. The program focuses on finding the strengths and challenges of a business venture. It also strives to cultivate knowledge, skills, and tools to develop a business concept.

The Rise Up Pitch Competition and Program offers Black women entrepreneurs at different stages of business an opportunity to pitch for the chance to win thousands of dollars in financial awards and resources. Co-organized by Black Business & Professional Association (BBPA), Casa Foundation, with support from, Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Bank of Montreal (BMO), Loblaw Companies Limited, and Women Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH), the program is designed to help Black women entrepreneurs develop key skills, build their networks, and find the support they need to succeed.
Black women entrepreneurs have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and face significant structural barriers to their entrepreneurial success. This program recognizes the African, Caribbean, and Black women entrepreneurs who have persevered with innovative business ideas, despite the various challenges they face.
